Kingman -- Charles R. (Charley) Davis, 77, died at 6:45 a.m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital at Danville, Ill. He had been hospitalized since suffering a stroke three weeks ago. Mr. Davis was a coal miner for a number of years and later was employed at the Kraft Cheese factory in Marshall. The past several years he had worked as caretaker at the Kingman Fraternal Cemetery. He was born Feb. 3, 1885, in Fountain County, a son of Isaac and Cassinda Philpott Davis. He was married Aug. 12, 1908 to Myrtle Alward. Mr. and Mrs. Davis celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1958. Survivors include the wife; a son, Charles (Bud) Davis of Veedersburg; three daughters, Mrs. Thelma Hinshaw of Marshall, Mrs. Bertha Hadley of Peoria, Ill., and Mrs. Eva Morgan of Crawfordsville; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Watson of Wallace, Mrs. Bessie Myler of Sidell, Ill. and Mrs. Opal Reed of Greencastle; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. (EST) Monday at the Woodrow Funeral Home here with Rev. John Servies in charge. Burial will be in the Kingman Fraternal Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home.

Born on Feb. 3, 1885, in Fountain County, he was the son of Isaac and Cassinda Philpott Davis. He was married Aug 12, 1908 to Myrtle Alward. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He was a coal miner and later worked at a cheese factory in Marshall. Mr.Davis was the caretaker at the Kingman Fraternal Cemetery.
